Panthers' Cam Newton equals two of childhood hero Steve Young's records

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton grew up idolizing former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young.

Now he is challenging the Hall of Famer's records.

Newton threw two touchdowns and rushed for two more in Sunday’s regular-season finale against Tampa Bay. That gave him 31 games with at least one of each, tying Young’s record.

Newton also tied Young’s record for most career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 43 in the 38-10 victory.

Newton has done all this in five NFL seasons. Young played 15 between Tampa Bay and San Francisco.

"Steve was always a guy I idolized," Newton said. "I got an opportunity to meet him a couple of times. And for me to be in the same talks with him -- it’s just a blessing.

"I couldn’t throw left-handed [like Young], but I tried to mimic his style as much as possible."
