Pac-10 in mock drafts

It's the season for mock NFL drafts, and Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have fired up their projections.

McShay projectsInsider where six Pac-12 players will be selected in the first round (32 picks).

Kiper projectsInsider five from the conference in the first round. Some of you will want to debate the individual Kiper leaves out and McShay rates highly.

Here are the Pac-12 players in McShay's first round:

Jake Locker, QB, Washington

No. 8, Tennessee

Tyron Smith, OT, USC

No. 12, Minnesota

Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

No. 13, Detroit

Akeem Ayers, LB, UCLA

No. 18, San Diego

Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State

No. 24, New Orleans

Cameron Jordan, DE, California

No. 29, Green Bay

Here are the Pac-12 players in Kiper's first round.

No. 12, Minnesota

No. 13, Detroit

No. 18, San Diego

No. 21, Kansas City

No. 32 Pittsburgh

Not surprisingly, there are differences here. But there's one obvious -- and sizable -- one: McShay has Locker going No. 8 overall and Kiper doesn't have Locker being picked.

McShay calls his projection of Locker in the top 10 a "reach," but here's his complete explanation:

[Missouri QB Blaine] Gabbert is the only quarterback in this class worthy of a top-10 grade. This is a reach for the Titans, but with the departure of Vince Young they need to find a long-term answer under center. Locker has some accuracy issues but his intangibles and work ethic are assets.
