National Signing Day on Feb. 3 is still seven weeks away, and lots of big names remain on the board, but it seemed like a good time to check in with Pac-10 recruiting.
At present, six programs appear in position to sign top-25 classes: California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington.
That doesn't mean they will. That doesn't mean others won't make a run.

There's not a lot of obvious punch here, but it seems like Mike Stoops knows what he's doing in recruiting. Much like Mike Riley at Oregon State, he evaluates and develops and doesn't worry about the star ratings.

The Sun Devils need help on offense, particularly on the offensive line, so that's why 13 of 16 commitments are on that side of the ball, including four linemen, two of whom are JC guys expected to compete immediately for playing time.

Cal ripped away a pair of players committed to Notre Dame and USC this week, so the Bears appear to be trending up the recruiting pecking order.

Touted tight end Curtis White may be an immediate candidate to step in for Ed Dickson, who is the Ducks' only departing senior on offense.

Poor ole Beavers. Just can't get any recruits with lots of stars by their names. How will they ever expect to win a game in the Pac-10? Wait. The Beavers are the Pac-10's third-winningest program this past decade? How can that be? Hmm.

Potentially another top-25 class for coach Jim Harbaugh. Safety Devon Carrington and running back Anthony Wilkerson are two elite recruits in need areas who could see playing time in 2010.

Rick Neuheisel looks like he's going to sign another top-25 class. With significant losses on defense, there will be a lot of opportunities for youngsters to step in.

The Trojans are doing well -- heck, almost half of their committed players are top-150 guys -- but they remain on the board with many of the nation's top prospects. Another strong finish and Pete Carroll will be back in the top 5 of the recruiting rankings. Or will recruiting mimic this past regular season?

While there aren't any top-150 players -- at least on the ESPNU list -- the Huskies' class is widely seen as a top-25 collection, topped by quarterback-of-the-future, Nick Montana. If Huskies fans are looking for something to worry about, they might notice a lack of cornerbacks.

Even during boom times, the Cougars rarely rate highly in recruiting, but there are plenty of guys here who can play, starting with tight end Aaron Dunn. Coach Paul Wulff groused during the season about other Pac-10 teams trying to poach his committed players, which only should tell him his evaluations are solid. Notably, Wulff isn't going for the quick fix: Only one JC player among his present commitments.
