When Joshua Wariboko backed away from his original commitment to Oklahoma earlier in the recruiting cycle, he made it clear he wanted to look at national programs and that he was wide open to leaving the Sooner State. And that’s exactly what Wariboko, the nation’s No. 105 player and eighth-best offensive guard, did Wednesday when he announced on ESPNU that he was signing with UCLA.
Wariboko picked the Bruins after making official visits to Ohio State, Louisville and Oklahoma, but in the end UCLA had to beat out the in-state Sooners. Doing so was no easy task, especially for somebody has highly coveted as Wariboko. But UCLA’s ace recruiter and offensive line coach Adrian Klemm was able to seal the deal after months of relentless pursuit.
Commitment impact: UCLA has already signed one of the nation’s best quarterbacks in Josh Rosen, and a quarterback’s best friends are the guys who give him time to pass. That’s exactly what makes this get big for the Bruins. Not only is Wariboko adept at run-blocking, he’s athletic enough to fit what UCLA wants out of its offensive linemen. Plus, landing Wariboko sends a message that the Bruins can recruit head-to-head against everybody in the country. Going into Oklahoma’s backyard and beating the Sooners for one of the most important players on their board is a big deal.
