Stanford has hired Bernard Muir as its new athletic director, the school announced Friday.
Muir, who will start in September, comes from the University of Delaware where he's held the same position since 2009. Prior to that he worked at Georgetown, Notre Dame, Butler, Auburn and with the NCAA.
"Bernard Muir has a national reputation as a superb athletic administrator," Stanford Provost John Etchemendy said in a statement. "He also has a deep personal understanding of what it means to be a scholar-athlete, performing at the very highest levels both academically and athletically. In Bernard Muir, we are confident we have a leader with the integrity, experience and commitment to ensure that Stanford's athletic legacy continues."
Muir succeeds Bob Bowlsby, who left Stanford last month to become the Big 12 commissioner after six years.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the Stanford community," Muir said. "This is a wonderful opportunity for our family. I'm looking forward to being part of the world-class tradition of excellence that characterizes the student-athlete experience at Stanford."
Stanford has won the Director's Cup 18 straight years -- given to the most successful program in all sports -- and the football team has gone to back-to-back BCS games. Stanford athletic teams have won at least one national championship annually for the past 36 years, the longest run in the country.
"Simply put, Stanford University made a brilliant hire," said Duke AD Kevin White in the same statement put out by the school. "Bernard Muir has already distinguished himself as a truly great leader. Bernard is terribly humble, incomparably intelligent and just drips with integrity. Moreover, Bernard is empathetic to a fault, inordinately task oriented, both clearly adaptable and situational, and ridiculously passionate about the plight of the student-athlete."
