American Idol alum Kimberley Locke released her new single "Finally Free" on Tuesday and talked with Playbook about music and sports. Locke, who starred in the second season of the singing competition, has lost more than 40 pounds by boxing, golfing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

So let's start with boxing. Seriously?

"I'm going to be really honest with you. For a brief point as a teenager, I wanted to become a boxer. And then I watched these two girls in the ring. They beat the snot out of each other. I thought to myself, 'It must feel good to punch someone in the face and get paid to do that.' Then, when they finished, I saw their faces. And that scared me. I thought, 'No way I could do that!'"

But you used boxing to help you lose weight, right?

"I'm that girl who will try anything once. Weight loss is a journey. I decided to go back to my younger days of being active and playful. I have friends who are into boxing and they got me on the speed bag. They taught me how to hit it correctly. It's not only a great workout, but I look great doing it!"

But you also took up tennis, surfing and golf?

"Like I said, I'll try anything once. I went surfing with a friend, and unfortunately it's on video. I got caught in a break. It's not on YouTube yet, but we have the video. We could send it to you! I now play tennis regularly. I try at least three times a week. It's just fun. Now, golf, that's a different story."

What do you mean?

"If I told you how much I'd already played this year, you'd be mad at me. My boyfriend and I have put in about 30 rounds of golf this year. We're very fortunate that we have a small place in Cooperstown, N.Y., and we belong to the country club. Speaking of that, I think we saw Pete Rose having lunch there recently. Well, back to my story. My boyfriend (who is not in the music business) and I really have gotten into golf. We meet so many people on the golf course. It's such a great sport. I need to get my boyfriend to go on a couples golfing retreat."

So tell me about this single, "Finally Free."

"It's basically the ultimate love song. You guys at ESPN may or may not be able to relate, but I'll give you a little credit! It's basically that love song where if you've been in a bad relationship, you finally break through and find somebody that is the yin to your yang. And you wouldn't change a thing because it brought me to you. It's kind of sappy, I know. But it's a great workout song!"
