Chargers OC Frank Reich confirms Maryland job interview, but staying put

SAN DIEGO -- Frank Reich, offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers, confirmed that he interviewed for the University of Maryland head coaching job.

Reich said the school approached him about the vacant position, and he determined that leading a football program at his alma mater where he played college football was a unique opportunity. Reich also has two daughters that attended Maryland.

But ultimately Reich decided not to pursue the job further because it wasn’t the right fit. Maryland hired former Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin.

“Every now and then when players play good and you get an opportunity to look at something like that, I think it’s worth looking at,” Reich said. “But I had a coach tell me one time when I got in, ‘Don’t be the kind of guy who’s always looking for that next job.’ And I’ve really always tried to take that to heart.”

Along with the Maryland job, Reich interviewed for the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coaching positions last season. He’s spent three years in San Diego, including one as the quarterbacks coach and two as the team’s offensive coordinator. Reich said he loves working for the Chargers and remains committed to the organization.

“I love it here,” Reich said. “Working for the Chargers’ organization and working for Mike (McCoy) the last three years here has been about the most fun I’ve had as a coach. It would just be hard to beat, what I’ve experienced in three years.”

That said, Reich said interviewing for a new job offered an opportunity to fine-tune his core beliefs as a coach and learn more about how different organizations operate, both around the NFL and in college.

“As for interviews, if they come or when they come, I want to be selective about those things,” Reich said. “But I never want to take them for granted.

“It’s actually kind of fun when you sit down and talk to people and they ask you questions, and you work through those things. There’s part of it that I think is good to help you develop as a leader, to hear the questions that get asked. But I’m not doing it just for that experience, you know what I mean? You take certain opportunities and look at them.”
