Power Rankings: No. 20 San Francisco 49ers

An examination of the San Francisco 49ers' ESPN.com Power Ranking:

Rank: 20| Ended Last Season: 18

Comment: Free agency is almost two month old, the draft is complete and undrafted rookies have been signed, so the San Francisco 49ers currently have 89 players on their roster. So what better time than the present to conduct a post-draft power ranking of the 32-team NFL? The 49ers finished last season ranked 18th after going 8-8 and lost nine starters to free agency and retirement and drafted for the future rather than immediate need, to the dismay and surprise of many.

“Compete, right, like we do at every position," general manager Trent Baalke said of his plans. "We're going to roll out the ball. Coaches are going to coach the heck out of them. We're going to find out exactly what we have in every one of those players and what role they will fill if they're on the 53(-man roster)."

As such, the Niners are ranked 20th in new coach Jim Tomsula's first offseason, their lowest in our poll since they were No. 23 in Week 3 of the 2011 season, Jim Harbaugh's first season.

“Personally, I feel tremendous with the roster we have," Tomsula said. "I feel really good about the roster we have, and all positions. Some are not as deep as I'd like them to be, you know what I mean? I'd like a little more depth here. There's a couple times in the last three days I was kind of hoping, don’t take that guy, because we could have put some depth in that spot. You know what I mean? But do I feel good? I feel fantastic about the roster, absolutely fantastic. And I feel fantastic about the competition that it's layered with."

Enjoy the offseason.
