49ers sign OT Sean Hooey off waivers from Jets

A week after right tackle Anthony Davis announced he was retiring, the San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of tackle Sean Hooey off waivers from the New York Jets.

Hooey, 24, spent the 2013 season on the St. Louis Rams practice squad after joining them as an undrafted free agent out of Cincinnati. The Jets signed him Jan. 23 before waiving him on Thursday.

The 6-foot-9, 304-pound Hooey adds training camp depth to a rebuilding Niners offensive line that not only has to replace Davis at right tackle, but Mike Iupati at left guard after he left for the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent. Free-agent pickup Erik Pears worked at first-team right tackle during minicamp, with Alex Boone, the team’s starting right guard the past three seasons, at left guard.
