What Osgood signing means for WR group

The re-signing of special teams ace Kassim Osgood on Monday essentially shrinks the candidates to make the team at receiver.

Osgood is officially listed as a receiver, but make no mistake -- he's on the team because he is a supreme special teamer. Osgood played sparingly at receiver last season yet he is counted as one on the 53-man roster. The 49ers will likely keep six receivers, including Osgood on the roster in 2014.

In addition to Osgood (it's a longshot that he doesn't make the team), starters Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree and promising second-year player Quinton Patton are locks to make the roster.

The 49ers have been linked to several receivers during the free-agency period, and they're expected take a receiver early in the draft. That means players such as Jon Baldwin, who made little impact last year, and practice squader Chuck Jacobs will have to compete for roster spots.

Thus, Osgood's signing lessons opportunities for others at the position even though he likely won't make much of an impact at receiver.
