Tyler Lockett's teammates expecting him to make a big impact

Tyler Lockett has come in as a rookie and made an impression on his teammates, who expect him to have a big season. Lenny Ignelzi/AP

Leading up to the opener, I asked a random group of Seahawks players a simple question:

Which teammate do you think is in store for a big year based on what you've seen this summer?

Here's what they said.

Doug Baldwin: "Tyler Lockett, for sure. He’s worked his tail off to get to this point. His work ethic is something that stands out to me. And I think that’s what’s going to ultimately drive him to success of being great, not only in this offense, but in this league. He has all the tools, all the ability and the work ethic and the intelligence, so there’s nothing in his way. I’m excited about his progress because he works really, really hard at it. And it’s genuine. So I’m excited about it."

K.J. Wright: "Besides myself [laughs]? There’s a lot of guys that look really good, but I’m really excited to see Lockett play. He’s looked tremendous this preseason -- both [on] offense and special teams. I believe he’s going to make a lot of noise this year. ... I knew once we drafted him he was going to be the special-teams guy. But I didn’t think he would come in here and get touchdowns like that. This is the NFL. Everybody is good. But he’s looking very impressive. And I believe with our special-teams coach, they’re going to put him in good positions to be successful."

Ahtyba Rubin: "Who really sticks out to me? I think Frank [Clark]. I’m excited to see how he’s going to grow into a player. He’s still a rookie. I think Frank is really making quick strides. He’s got a lot of confidence. That’s a good thing. And he also makes plays. When you have confidence and you make plays to back it up, that’s what stands out to me."

Jimmy Graham: "Lockett. Explosive player, young, but understands the game already."

Cliff Avril: "I’d say Brandon Mebane. I worked out with him all summer. I’ve seen what he’s done to get back, and he’s looking a lot more explosive than he has in the past. And he’s been playing some good ball, so I can only imagine [him] getting some time off and the rehab and all that stuff, what he’s going to do. So I definitely think he’s going to have a good season."

Bobby Wagner: "K.J. [Wright]. I just think for a long time people have been sleeping on him, and the work that he’s put in, the way he’s prepared, the way he’s looking right now, that’s the guy I would choose."

Bruce Irvin: "K.J. Wright. I just feel like he’s gotten a lot smarter. He recognizes plays faster. I feel like he’s shown great leadership and taken control of the defense. Him and [Bobby] Wagner."

Garry Gilliam: "Probably Lockett. I’m excited to watch him play. He’s been explosive on special teams and on offense. I’m excited to see him get the ball in his hands and make some plays."

Brandon Mebane: "I like Lockett. I like Frank Clark. I think they’re going to come in and be a big part of the team and contribute a whole lot."

J.R. Sweezy: "I’ll tell you somebody, he’s on the practice squad right now, but Will Pericak. He switched from D-line to O-line. He’s really impressed me how he’s taking on to it and how he’s learning every day. I think down the road he can be something special. Something to keep an eye out for."

Ricardo Lockette: "Oh, for sure 16 [Lockett]. Have you been getting that answer a lot? His attention to detail and his willingness to be great and just his confidence in himself."

Justin Britt: "Tyler Lockett. Just somebody who came in and worked his butt off right away, and you can tell that he wants to be great, and it shows."

Marcus Burley: "You have Dion Bailey who’s stepping up, looking really good at the safety position. He plays aggressive, tough, really willing to tackle, looking really good."

Cooper Helfet: "Lockett’s been pretty solid. Exciting to see him in the return game and out there catching balls. He’s got small-ass hands, but he still catches everything, so it’s pretty impressive. It’s hard to come in as a rookie on this team and make a big contribution. It seems like he’s going to be ready to do that."
