First-year Florida coach Jim McElwain has been busy this summer with camps and recruiting and simply getting acclimated to his new job. But that didn’t stop him from reaching out to a former player in trouble.
Former Colorado State defensive lineman Eli Edwards recently lost his wife after a battle with Lupus. Stuck in New Zealand where his wife was receiving treatment, Edwards and their daughter have been unable to afford a flight back to the United States. He set up a GoFundMe account to try and raise money from friends, and that’s where McElwain got involved.
The page has raised more than $20,000 for Edwards and his family since it launched earlier this month, but the biggest donation was a $5,000 gift from MacFam LLC, a corporation operated by McElwain and his wife.
