The SEC's best big-play teams

I did something recently on Florida's inability to create many big plays offensively last season and how that crippled the Gators.

The Gators plummeted to 10th in the SEC with 49 plays of 20 yards or longer, and that's after tying for the lead nationally in 2009 with 83 plays of 20 yards or longer and tying for fifth nationally in 2008 with 82 plays of 20 yards or longer.

Several of you have asked how the rest of the SEC has fared in that category, and thanks to the Stats & Info Department at ESPN, we have our answer.

Auburn was second nationally and led the SEC last season with 86 plays of 20 yards or longer.

Over the last three seasons, Florida has had more plays of 20 yards or longer (214) than any other SEC team, although Arkansas is right behind the Gators with 212 plays of 20 yards or longer during that same three-year span. Georgia is third with 210 plays of 20 yards or longer.

And if you don't think a lack of big plays can hinder an offense, consider that Vanderbilt has ranked 100th or worse nationally each of the last three seasons in plays of 20 yards or longer. The Commodores have combined for just 102 big plays during those three seasons.

The last two seasons, LSU has also been way down when it comes to generating big plays. They were 11th in the SEC last season with 48 plays of 20 yards or longer and were 10th in 2009 with 41 plays of 20 yards or longer. Not surprisingly, LSU finished 11th in the SEC last season in total offense and was last in total offense in 2009.

Here's how it breaks down in the SEC over the last three seasons. Again, these are the number of offensive plays 20 yards or longer:
