Florida's Spikes has some explaining to do

Nobody likes a dirty player.

And the truth is that the best football players don’t have to stoop to dirty tactics.

But the video that’s circulating of Florida’s Brandon Spikes that appears to show him attempting to gouge the eyes of Georgia’s Washaun Ealey in a pile last Saturday is about as dirty as it gets.

If that’s what he was trying to do, then Florida’s Urban Meyer should do the right thing and suspend Spikes immediately before the SEC even has a chance to step in.

The video is pretty damning, but we don’t see what happened right before and we don’t know if Spikes was retaliating for some reason.

Even if he was, that doesn’t give him the right to go after somebody’s eyes.

Keep in mind, too, that there was no penalty called on the play. So it wasn’t something that was seen or called on the field.

Meyer was asked about the play Sunday by reporters and said he would have a “very serious talk” with Spikes if it turns out that Spikes was indeed trying to gouge Ealey’s eyes.

I would hope Meyer takes it a bit further than that. Otherwise, he’s sending a clear signal that he condones that type of thing.

Football is a tough game and a man’s game.

But it’s not a dirty game.
