Kiermaier adds to his defensive ledger by stealing HR

Score another amazing catch for Kevin Kiermaier and another instance of frustration for the Baltimore Orioles.

Kiermaier’s catch of Manny Machado fly ball was his second home run robbery of the season. He tied Mike Trout, Will Venable and Avisail Garcia for the major-league lead.

Kiermaier suffered a mildly sprained right ankle on the landing after the catch and left the game in the third inning. The team announced his status as day-to-day.

The Orioles have now been robbed of six home runs this season. The teams with the next-most are the Rangers and Rockies with three each.

Kiermaier entered the day with 33 defensive runs saved this season, 13 more than the player with the next-most, Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford with 20.

Kiermaier’s 48 runs saved over the last two seasons are also the most in the majors.

Kiermaier was named the defensive player of the month for June by the Sweet Spot blog. August’s winner will be announced on Wednesday.

Kiermaier ranks among the leading candidates. He entered the day tied with Ender Inciarte and Crawford with nine defensive runs saved in August.
