Don't forget that Rodgers can run a little too

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t just win that game with his 61-yard touchdown pass with no time remaining. He won it with his legs too.

That was true on a couple of fronts.

The pass

By now you’ve seen the most amazing 13 seconds in the NFL this season. That’s how long the Hail Mary the Packers successfully ran lasted from start to finish.

Rodgers did his part with his legs, keeping the play alive with nearly eight seconds of scrambling, taking six steps back, three to the left, and then a dash of about a dozen steps back to the right before unleashing a throw from his own 36 that was caught about two yards deep in the end zone.

The way we calculate throw distance is to base it on yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Rodgers’ throw went 61 yards beyond the line of scrimmage (using the front of the end zone as our endpoint), the longest for any touchdown pass in our data set, which goes back 10 years.

With regards to the difficulty of that pass, consider this. Over the last three seasons, quarterbacks have completed only 23 percent of passes thrown at least 50 yards beyond the line of scrimmage (30 out of 128).

Richard Rodgers, who made the catch, had more receiving yards on that play than he had in any game prior to Thursday (58). He finished with a career-high 146 receiving yards.

It completed the fourth-biggest comeback in Packers history (from 20 points down) and marked the second time in three seasons they came back from 20 down in the second half to win (they also did so against the Cowboys in 2013).

The run

The other was the 17-yard touchdown run with 3:12 left that cut the Packers’ deficit to 23-21. It was the second-longest touchdown run of Rodgers’ career. He had a 27-yarder against the Lions in December 2012.

Rodgers is one of only four quarterbacks to have a touchdown run of at least 17 yards this season. The other three are Marcus Mariota, Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Twenty NFL quarterbacks had rushed for a touchdown this season prior to Thursday. Rodgers became the 21st.

Rodgers finished as the Packers leading rusher in the game, finishing with 27 yards. He’s now rushed for 287 yards this season, his most since rushing for a career-high 356 in 2010.
