NEW YORK -- Phillies CEO David Montgomery remains cautiously optimistic the Phillies' home games in the World Series will not be disrupted by a regional transit strike.
Members of Transport Workers Union Local 234 voted Sunday to authorize a walkout, and the union's president said he would call a strike by week's end if agreement on a new contract is not reached.
Montgomery, seated in the visitors dugout at Yankee Stadium prior to Game 1, said comments made by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter Monday during the city's pep rally saluting the National League champs were encouraging.
A strike could prove a perfect storm when the Series moves to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4 and, if necessary, Game 5. The combination of a mass transit shutdown hitting the city and a Sunday where both the Eagles and Phillies play home games in the city's sports complex in South Philadelphia is especially troubling. The Eagles are scheduled to play the Giants at 1 p.m., while Game 4 of the Series is scheduled for 8 p.m.
