Joey Votto's amazing hot streak

Joey Votto had reached base in 38 of his past 51 plate appearances entering Wednesday. David Zalubowski/AP

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto entered Wednesday's game having reached base 37 times in his past 50 appearances over 11 games (and 38 in 51 going back to his last plate appearance of the game before that). That's an incredible on-base percentage of .700. Against major league pitching. The last batter to do that: No surprise, Barry Bonds in his 2004 season when he broke the game with a .609 OBP. According to Elias, Bonds reached base 37 times in 50 plate appearances from May 27 to June 8 of that season.

One big difference between the two streaks: Bonds was intentionally walked 13 times during his stretch, Votto just twice. While Bonds hit .481, Votto has hit .595.

Here is Votto's run of those 51 PAs, with play descriptions from ESPN Stats & Info:

As you can see, a lot of line drives. Looks like a couple bloops and flares in there but this isn't a streak built on luck. He's been scorching the ball.
