Buccaneers, Lavonte David talking contract extension

TAMPA, Fla. -- It’s time for our weekly trip into the Twitter mailbag.

@PatYazESPN: I'm told there is an open dialogue. Both sides would like to get a deal done as soon as possible. The Bucs view Lavonte David as one of the best outside linebackers in the game. They're going to have to pay him accordingly.

@PatYazESPN: I think D.J. Swearinger is an upgrade. Apparently, the Bucs think highly of him. He was working with the first team this week on the strong side. He's a talented guy who might benefit from getting a fresh start.

@PatYazESPN: Evan Mathis is 33, so he would only be a very short-term solution. The Bucs have draft picks invested in Ali Marpet and Kadeem Edwards, and they want to get them on the field. As far as Demar Dotson, I'm told he is expected to attend next week's minicamp. He still wants a new contract, but showing up for minicamp could jump start the negotiations.

@PatYazESPN: I'll say middle linebacker Bruce Carter. The Bucs jumped on him in free agency because they believe he's a big upgrade over Mason Foster in coverage. Carter had five interceptions in Dallas last year, and the Bucs are hoping he can have a similar impact for them.

@PatYazESPN: Probably not right away. The Bucs are pretty well set with David on the weak side and Carter in the middle. Lansanah is the likely starter on the strong side. Alexander will have a role as a backup and special teams player, but he could blossom into a starter over time.
