TAMPA, Fla. -- Mike Evans said Tuesday that he didn't mean to cause a commotion over the weekend by wearing the jersey of another NFL team.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver wore a No. 2 Cleveland Browns jersey -- in honor of quarterback Johnny Manziel -- to the Texas A&M-Alabama game on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
Manziel was Evans' quarterback at Texas A&M during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Still, some eyebrows were raised regarding Evans' jersey choice.
"I had bought it last year, and I thought it was the best time to wear it. You think Texas A&M, and you think Johnny Manziel, right?" Evans said as the Bucs returned from their bye week. "But it was a Browns jersey, so I guess I should have probably worn an A&M jersey. But I didn't have one, so I thought that would be the best thing."
Evans gained 2,499 yards with 17 touchdowns on 151 catches in two seasons with the Aggies. In 2014, the Bucs drafted Evans seventh overall and the Browns selected Manziel 22nd overall.
Manziel has gained notoriety for his off-field behavior since winning the Heisman Trophy in 2012. On Oct. 12, police questioned him because of a domestic incident, and Manziel admitted to drinking earlier in the day. He was not charged.
Evans said no one from the Bucs has mentioned the Browns jersey to him. He has good memories from his visit to the newly renovated Kyle Field.
"Oh, it was great, man," Evans said. "To see that new stadium, it's tough to beat."
