Marcus Mariota's jersey was NFL's top seller in May

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- For years, Tennessee Titans fans seeking to support their team with the traditional jersey purchase were torn: Whose name and number warranted the investment?

Defensive lineman Jurrell Casey and tight end Delanie Walker remain safe purchases as they are very good players who will be around. But the marketing punch that comes with a Heisman Trophy winner and the No. 2 draft pick has provided a big new option.

In mid-May, a Titans official said Marcus Mariota's jersey was the top-seller in the NFL.

And that held true for the entire month, per ESPN's Darren Rovell.

Mariota was first, with Jameis Winston, Tom Brady, Russell Wilson and Odell Beckham Jr. rounding out the top five.

The news tells us two things:

1. The honeymoon phase is strong. Mariota hasn't played a meaningful snap yet, but people don't care. They like the clean, trouble-free Mariota and the way he carries himself. And they are happy to invest in hope.

2. He's national. I've seen a lot of Mariota jerseys in Nashville, but we've also seen indications of strong sales in Oregon, where he played for the Ducks. I imagine they are big in Hawaii as well, as that's where Mariota's from.

Mariota is slated to visit with my radio show, The Midday 180, at 1:20 CT Wednesday. You can listen here.
