NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker has effectively made the case that the cure of the team’s offensive line issues should be found with veterans, not rookies.

Still, if the Titans are to make a big move to try to fix their pass protection and run blocking in the draft, it could come at the very top, in the form of Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil.

Many scouts and analysts believe Tunsil is a better prospect and more ready to have a first-day impact than any recent tackle coming into the league.

In a recent conference call with ESPN.com’s NFL Nation reporters, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. mentioned Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley as "arguably the best left tackle in the draft."

So I asked Kiper about his judgment of the gap between Tunsil and Stanley.

"Tunsil is more the Orlando Pace type than he is the Eric Fisher type. Eric Fisher was forced up to the No. 1 spot. Luke Joeckel was in the mix that year, because there really wasn’t anybody else to look at in that spot," Kiper said. "It was a weak spot for elite guys in terms of the projections going in.

"Tunsil, in any draft, would be an elite left tackle. When he played, he played at a high level and he was as good as any left tackle to come out in recent years. So can he be Walter Jones? That’s who he kind of reminds me of, when Walter Jones came out of Florida State. Yeah, he can be one of the best left tackles in the NFL."

Stanley doesn’t rate as quite that good a prospect right now in Kiper’s eyes, but he could get there. Kiper gave the Titans Tunsil at No. 1 in his most recent mock draft, and he has Stanley disappearing quickly too, going eighth to Miami.

"Stanley’s still, I think, a work in progress," Kiper said. "Tunsil is more of a finished product. Stanley could be as good as Tunsil, maybe a little better, who knows? He’s got tremendous talent. He needs to become a little more consistent, eliminate mistakes here or there. If he becomes more consistent, he’s a tremendous pass blocker. Go back and look at him against some real good defensive ends, he did a heck of a job.

"If you polled 10 personnel evaluators, six or seven would say Tunsil, maybe two, three, four would say Stanley. Tunsil is the better player right now. But Stanley could be an elite left tackle, that’s why I think he’s a guaranteed top-10 pick, probably in the top seven or eight."

If the Titans judge Tunsil a singular talent, I could see him as the No. 1 pick if they don’t trade out.

If they see Tunsil and Stanley as close to comparable, then they wouldn't be getting a one-of-a-kind type, and taking another young tackle talent with the first pick might not be the move.
