Tank-O-Meter: Which teams can afford to tank?

Some teams can't tank without facing massive repercussions; other teams might have more flexibility. Jim Bowden scores all 30 MLB clubs. Elias Stein

The standings tell only a part of the story. Intentions are a whole different ballgame.

Some teams are trying to win, but a few bad breaks have ruined their season.

Others are focusing their efforts in the opposite direction -- tanking!

We take a look at all 30 teams and judge them on their capability to fully tank and post awful seasons -- now and in the future -- based on history, ownership, finances, fan expectations and more.

A score of 1 on the Tank-O-Meter means the team can't tank without massive repercussions -- fan revolt, for just one example; a rank of 5 means a full tank -- and full speed ahead (whenever the circumstances are suitable for it, that is).

Atlanta Braves

GM: John Hart/John Coppolella

Tank-O-Meter: 5

Analysis: The Braves have been "all-in" on the tank method and it should result in the first overall pick in the 2017 draft. Now that they’ve accomplished that, they’ve started to build it back -- acquiring Matt Kemp at the trade deadline from the Padres. They’ll now look to trade from their strong farm system for major league-ready players and delve into free agency as they open their new stadium in April.
