Jay Gruden doesn't expect his brother to change his approach, just because he's the guy in charge on the sidelines.
Jon Gruden, of course, will call the Redskins preseason game against Cleveland Monday night on ESPN. It'll be a warm-up for when the Redskins play a regular-season game on "Monday Night Football" against Seattle on Oct. 6. The two are competitive, with each boasting they were the superior athlete (though Jon Gruden always calls his younger brother the more steady one).
"Jon is Jon," Jay Gruden said. "He's going to be positive if he can, but if I do something that's out-of-line ignorant, I'm sure he'll call me on it."
Jon Gruden has worked two games involving his brother in the past. But that's when Jay Gruden was Cincinnati's offensive coordinator (Gruden is 1-1 in games worked by his brother). It's a different ballgame now that he's the head coach. Every decision -- from play calls to timeouts and game management -- must be scrutinized. Gruden also knows his younger brother is still learning to be an NFL head coach and talked this past week about wanting to improve his own game-day success.
As part of the pregame preparation, Jon Gruden met with his brother at Redskins Park Saturday. They were supposed to get together again Saturday night. But come Monday night both will have a job to do.
"Jon is very good at what he does," Jay Gruden said. "He won't jeopardize what he does for my feelings. That's for sure. He never has."
