Justin Masterson, Red Sox agree

The Boston Red Sox reached an agreement Thursday with free-agent pitcher Justin Masterson, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

The 28-year-old right-hander had a difficult 2014 campaign, struggling with a knee injury that landed him on the disabled list with the Cleveland Indians and later in the season was relegated to the bullpen by the St. Louis Cardinals, who acquired him in a trade-deadline move.

Masterson finished 7-9 with a 5.88 ERA last season between the two clubs and was 3-3 with a 7.04 ERA with St. Louis after the trade. He opened last season as the ace of the Indians, following an All-Star season in 2013 when he went 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA.

Masterson, who is 60-72 with a 4.24 ERA in seven seasons with the Red Sox, Indians and Cardinals, was paid $9,762,500 in 2014.
