BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said the pain from his right Achilles strain has not gone away, and he might receive an injection Monday to help reduce the inflammation in his heel.
Ortiz was placed on the disabled list July 16 with the injury and was eligible to be activated Aug. 1. With this latest setback, Ortiz doesn't think he'll now be able to return for the remainder of this homestand, which concludes Wednesday.
"I might get injected tomorrow," he said. "I'm thinking about it. Not cortisone or anything like that, I don't know. I have to talk to the doctor. I've got to get more information. I've got to talk to the doctor because I'm still very sore."
Ortiz was vague on the type of injection he would receive because "it's too deep for me" but he described it as some sort of anesthesia where they "try to numb something, like around the tendon just to see if they can get some room in the tendon to get rid of the inflammation."
Earlier in the day, Valentine said Ortiz was scheduled to go through a "full-bore workout" on Sunday, but Ortiz only received treatment. Ortiz said he won't be able to work out Monday, either.
"I'm sore, man," he said after Boston's 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday at Fenway Park.
"Am I worried? Of course. I haven't played in the last three weeks and I still have pain. I'm not worried about getting worse, because I know I'm getting better, but the pain won't go away. I don't know if that's part of the healing process, I don't know. Some days I feel better, and I think the next day is going to be even better, but the next day I come back and continue to be sore. After I work out and do things, I get very sore, too."
