Report: Welker progressing

New England Patriots slot receiver Wes Welker is "doing very well" three weeks after he underwent knee surgery to repair a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, a league source told The Boston Herald.

The news should bring some relief to Welker as well as New England fans, who last year watched quarterback Tom Brady battle a dangerous staph infection at this point in his recovery from the same surgery.

It's unclear, however, whether Welker will be ready to play when the 2010 season begins.

Welker tore his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the first quarter of the Patriots' season-finale loss to the Houston Texans.
