SHEFFIELD, England -- South African Mbulelo Botile knocked out Paul Ingle of England in the 12th round Saturday to win the IBF world featherweight title.
Ingle was knocked down by three left hands just seconds before the bell ended the 11th round. Then, after just 20 seconds of the 12th, Ingle was knocked out by a stinging left. He remained on his back at the edge of the ring for several minutes after the fight ended and had to be carried out on a stretcher by a team of paramedics. On Sunday, Ingle was making "satisfactory progress" after a blood clot was removed from his brain.
Botile, a former world bantamweight champion, wore down Ingle with steady counterpunching and by controlling the center of the ring with the weaving Ingle never able to find an opening.
Botile, 27-1, took the title in Ingle's second defense. Ingle slipped to 24-2, his only other loss coming against unbeaten Naseem Hamed.
There were three other title fights on Saturday's card.
In the WBO bantamweight title fight, Panama's Mauricio Martinez held his title by knocking down challenger Esham Pickering of Britain twice in the first 72 seconds of the fight.
Pickering was floored with a left and, after he staggered back to his feet, was knocked down by a long right. It was Martinez's first defense of his title.
Daniel Santos of Puerto Rico retained his WBO welterweight crown with a second-round knockout of Neil Sinclair of Northern Ireland. Both fighters were down in the first round, but Santos won the fight with a thundering left hand in the second that left Sinclair sprawled on the floor.
Santos is 24-2-1 and was making his second title defense.
In a non-title bout, unbeaten Brazilian Acelino Freitas scored his 28th consecutive knockout, this one against Puerto Rico's Daniel Alicea.
Freitas, with his 11th first-round knockout, caught Alicea with a right hand after only 61 seconds. Alicea stumbled to his feet but was not allowed to continue. Alicea's record slipped to 24-3-1.
American fighter Lewis Wood pulled out of his challenge to WBO super-featherweight champion Freitas and Alicea stepped in with no title at stake.
