Suit accuses Sanigar of fronting as promoter

Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis is suing a British boxing promoter, accusing him of trying to promote events that were handled by another company.

Lawyer Walter Bailey of Memphis said Tuesday that he filed the suit on Lewis' behalf while Lewis was in town to fight Mike Tyson. Lewis knocked out Tyson in the eighth round Saturday night.

Bailey said boxing promoter Chris Sanigar was issued a summons and a copy of the suit while at the Memphis Pyramid for the fight.

The $1 million suit accuses Sanigar of fronting as the promoter of various boxing events that were actually handled by Panix Promotions.

Bailey said no date has been set for a hearing on the suit.

Sanigar was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.

Panix has been ordered by a New York court to pay $7.2 million in damages for breaching its fiduciary duty while serving as a promoter for Lewis.

The suit, filed last week, said Sanigar was trying to "frustrate the judgment against Panix.''
