SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Felix Trinidad said Sunday that he was retiring from boxing, three weeks after his father and lawyer said the former champion would no longer fight.
"The moment has come,'' the 29-year-old Trinidad told reporters at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. "I am sound, I am healthy, I am retiring because it is time to retire.
"Right now I'm going to rest and do the things that I like to do -- share with my family and enjoy my horses, my fighting cocks and my cars.''
The Puerto Rican star, unable to get a rematch with Bernard Hopkins, appeared in good spirits, dancing with the music that played over the stadium loudspeakers before the news conference.
But in thanking his mother, Irma Doris Garcia, and his wife, Sharon, Trinidad broke down and cried for more than a minute. He also thanked his father and manager, Felix Trinidad Rodriguez, for his responsible and sound advice.
Trinidad Rodriguez told The Associated Press earlier this month that he and his son made the decision to retire after speaking with promoter Don King, who informed them there was little chance of a rematch with Hopkins.
Hopkins stopped Trinidad in the 12th round last September in Las Vegas in a middleweight title unification fight, Trinidad's only career loss.
Trinidad, 41-1 with 34 knockouts, took part in 21 title fights. He competed in multimillion-dollar fights and won middleweight, welterweight and super welterweight titles.
In his last fight, Trinidad stopped French journeyman Hacine Cherifi in May in San Juan. |
