WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- The manager for North Dakota boxer Virgil Hill says he and his fighter would like to line up two more bouts this year. Bill Sorensen of Bismarck, N.D., said the primary goal is setting up a rematch with Jean-Marc Mormeck, who beat Hill last year for the WBA cruiserweight title. Hill, 39, has talked recently about retiring after the next fight he loses. On Saturday, he used his jab seemingly at will in scoring a 10-round unanimous decision over Donny Lalonde in Winnipeg's CanWest Global baseball stadium. "For the most part, it was the jab of old," Hill said. "It felt really, really strong." Lalonde, 43, said he was surprised by Hill's strength. "I started watching instead of throwing (punches)," he said. "He was a better fighter than I was mentally prepared for." Hill, a four-time world champion, holds the IBC cruiserweight title. He last won a major world title three years ago when he took the WBA cruiserweight belt from Fabrice Tiozzo in France with a first-round knockout. Hill said before the fight with Lalonde that he considered the fight "business" and not personal. He even joked with Lalonde in the ring. After a solid left hook landed by Hill in the fourth round, "(Lalonde) said, 'I always fall for that one,"' Hill said. "I said, 'Well, you just fell for it again.'" Hill's trainer, Mike Hall, labeled the fight a "mismatch in speed, power and strength" and said Hill might have let his friendship with Lalonde get in the way of a knockout victory. "Virgil should have won every round," Hall said. "Nearly did, but that's not good enough. He let down mentally because the guy's his friend. "It's nothing personal (against Hill), but I thought he was too nice," Hall said. Hill, who improved his record to 49-4, said it was a tough fight and he was happy just to get the victory. "It was a fight, and I won," he said. |
