At 11:20 p.m. ET, WBC champion Lennox Lewis and WBA and IBF champion Evander Holyfield were entering the ring for their undisputed heavyweight world championship fight at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The fight got under way at 11:28 p.m. ET. Holyfield is wearing purple trunks with red trim; Lewis is weiring white trunks with red trim.
Among the 17,000 fans are nearly 7,000 Britons who traveled to Las Vegas to support Lewis, who is trying to become the first British undisputed heavyweight champion of the world this century.
Round One
The fighters opened with several jabs, none of which landed. Lewis
got in a short left to the head and they clinched briefly. There
were no serious punches landed in the first minute. Holyfield
landed two short rights to the head and they clinched about
mid-round. Lewis missed a right, Holyfield landed a right to the
body and they clinched. Holyfield was warned about using his head.
Lewis landed a right uppercut and missed a left with a minute left.
Lewis landed another right uppercut and they clinched. Holyfield
got in two stiff jabs at 30 seconds. Holyfield dug a right to the
body. Lewis landed a left to the head and missed a right with 10
seconds left.

Round Two
Both opened with jabs, Lewis getting in three good ones. Action
then slowed. Holyfield was trying to get inside and Lewis was
trying to keep him at bay. Lewis got in three jabs. Action slowed
again. Lewis got in a right uppercut at mid-round as the crowd
waited for something to happen. Lewis missed a right and backed
away, then landed a light right to the body and two jabs. Holyfield
got in two jabs and dug a left to the body. Lewis got in a right to
the head at 2 minutes, then a short right lead. Lewis landed a left
to the head with 30 seconds left. Both men were on their toes but
did little punching.

Round Three
Lewis got in a left jab then a big right and a left to the head
at about 30 seconds. Once again action slowed. At this point, it
was anything but an action fight. Lewis got in a right to the head
and Holyfield two jabs at about a minute. Lewis got in a right to
the head near mid-round, then a stiff jab but missed a right. Lewis
got in a left to the head. Holyfield got inside, but Lewis tied him
up immediately. Holyfield was trying to figure out how to get in.
Lewis stayed away and got in a jab past the 2-minute mark. A short
right lead by Lewis landed. The crowd was getting restless and
there were some boos. Holyfield landed a hard right to the head
that brought a roar from the crowd. There was some mauling along
the ropes in the last 20 seconds. Lewis landed a couple punches
just before the bell.

Round Four
Lewis opened with a jab. They exchanged rights past the
30-second mark. Lewis got in a short right lead and a stiff jab.
There was a lot of feinting but little punching as they passed the
minute mark. Lewis landed another jab. Neither man was doing much.
At mid-round, Holyfield bulled Lewis into the ropes, but no damage
was done by either man. Lewis was landing his jab but with no
authority. They clinched, and Holyfield got in three rights to the
ribs. Lewis got in a left to the head, Holyfield a left to the
body. Lewis landed a grazing right to the head, then two more
rights and a left to the body. Holyfield ducked two rights and
landed a right at the bell.

Holyfield got in a left hook to the head. Holyfield was warned
for using his head. Lewis is cut next to the right eye. Time was
called for two seconds and the fight resumed. Lewis got in a hook
and the pace was picking up. Lewis' fans began chanting. Holyfield
landed a right to the body. Action then slowed as the round entered
its second half. Lewis got in two jabs. Holyfield got in a left to
the body and they clinched briefly. Lewis landed two right jabs
with about 30 seconds left. Lewis got in two jabs at 15 seconds and
a right to the body.

Round Six
Lewis landed a left jab to the head and they exchanged jabs.
Holyfield landed a right to the body. Once again, there was a lapse
in the action. Lewis landed a right to the body and a short right
uppercut to the head. When Holyfield gets inside, Lewis wraps him
up but doesn't make him pay for coming in. Lewis landed two rights.
Lewis leaned back against the ropes and then clinched. Holyfield
landed a left hook to the head with a minute left. Holyfield got in
a left to the body and missed a hook to the head. Lewis got in a
right lead. The crowd began chanting , "Holyfield! Holyfield!"
Lewis complained of being butted. Holyfield got in a left jab at
the bell.

Lewis landed two rights to the head and they clinched. Lewis dug
a right to the body and pushed Holyfield off, getting a warning
from the referee. Lewis got in a right and left, then a left to the
head, then two more short punches and a right uppercut. Holyfield
landed a big right. Lewis backed up and Holyfield came after him.
Holyfield got in two rights to the body and they clinched.
Then Holyfield landed a hook and left-right. In the last 30
seconds, they had a toe-to-toe exchange.

Lewis came out stalking Holyfield. Both landed light punches to
the head. Lewis landed a right high on the head at a minute.
Holyfield got in a hook that backed up Lewis. Lewis got in a
left-right and a left to the body. Lewis landed a short right
uppercut to the head at about mid-round. They clinched. Lewis
appeared tired. Lewis got in two jabs, then two more and a right to
the body. With a minute to go, they clinched and referee Mitch
Halpern had to break them up. Lewis got in two jabs and a right to
the body. Lewis landed a hard left jab and a right lead. Lewis got
in a left-right to the body, Holyfield a right to the head. Lewis
got in two more punches to the body and a right to the head.

right to the head before they clinched. They mauled for several
seconds before Halpern broke them up. Lewis landed a right to the
body nearing the minute mark. Lewis landed a right uppercut. Action

seconds. Holyfield landed a left at the belt line and two hooks to
the head. Lewis got in a left to the body with a minute left. Lewis
landed a right, Holyfield came back with a right and Lewis landed a

then another. They clinched at about mid-round. Lewis got in a
sharp right uppercut before moving away, then landed a right lead
and a right to the body. Another right lead by Lewis. Lewis got in
a left hook and Holyfield came back with a left hook. Lewis dug a
right uppercut to the head and a right to the body. Lewis landed a
right uppercut just before the bell.

After 10 rounds, Lewis had a 164-114 advantage in punches.
Holyfield got in two short rights to the head. Both landed jabs to
the body. Action slowed. Lewis got in two jabs with two minutes
left, then a short right lead. Holyfield got in a good left hook
with 1:20 left. Lewis got in two jabs before moving away. Action
slowed considerably until Lewis got in a right uppercut. Lewis
landed a stiff jab, then another, then a right to the body and two
rights to the head. Lewis got in two or three more shots to the
head with 10 seconds left.

They exchanged jabs 20 seconds into the round. Lewis landed a
jab, Holyfield landed a good right hook. Then they started mauling.
Holyfield got in a good hook at the minute mark. Lewis landed two
jabs and a right to the head. The crowd chanted "U-S-A." They
clinched. They were very tired. Lewis landed a jab with a minute
left and they clinched. Holyfield dug a left to the body. They were
doing more mauling than punching. Lewis got in a left to the jaw
and they wrestled before parting.
