Kell Brook says he respects Amir Khan for opting to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez -- but still believes an all-British bout could happen in the future.

Khan and Alvarez will battle it out for the Mexican's WBC world middleweight title in Las Vegas on May 7, in a fight that will see the Brit rise up two weight divisions from his preferred welterweight.

The Bolton fighter, who missed out on lucrative bouts with both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, looked likely to face British rival Brook at Wembley Stadium on June 4 before deciding to take the Alvarez fight.

"I'm gutted for all the fans," Brook told Sky Sports News HQ. "We all thought we were going to make the fight this time and we were very close to getting a deal done, but he's jumped up a few weight divisions to fight Canelo -- in a fight I don't think he can win.

"I wish him all the best for this fight. It's a dream fight because Canelo is up there as one of the best in the boxing world, so let's see what he can do with him.

"I respect him for taking the fight and once he's got the fight out the way, who knows? We could still sit down and make the fight happen."

Khan's fight with Alvarez has divided opinion across the boxing world, with Tyson Fury believing his fellow countryman can be victorious in Sin City. However, Matthew Hatton -- younger brother of Ricky -- lost to Alvarez five years ago and claims Khan will struggle against his 25-year-old opponent.

Brook, meanwhile, is next in action on March 26, when he defends his IBF strap against mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier in Sheffield.
