Kim Clavel-Jessica Nery Plata unification bout postponed due to flu

The junior flyweight unification fight between WBC champion Kim Clavel and WBA titlist Jessica Nery Plata set for Thursday in Laval, Canada, has been rescheduled after Clavel came down with the flu, her promoter tweeted Tuesday evening.

Clavel's promoter, Yvon Michel, said Wednesday that the fight will now take place Jan. 13, 2023, at the same site, where the entire card remains the same.

The fight is set to be the first title defense for both women. Clavel beat Yesenia Gomez by unanimous decision in July and Plata defeated Yesica Bopp in March.

It's a matchup that could provide more clarity in the junior flyweight division. The 32-year-old Clavel (16-0, 3 KO) is ranked No. 2 in the division by ESPN; the 28-year-old Plata (28-2, 3 KO) is No. 5 in ESPN's junior flyweight rankings.

Both fighters had been in Canada and participating in fight week activities when Clavel got sick.

The fight will bring the division closer to unification. Yokasta Valle won the WBO and IBF titles on Saturday by defeating Evelin Bermudez by unanimous decision.
