Analyst Bob Brenly will not return to the Chicago Cubs television broadcast booth next season, WGN announced Wednesday.
Brenly, whose contract was up after the 2012 season, told the team he will not return and will "seek another baseball broadcasting position," according to WGN-TV.
"Working here in Chicago was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my professional career," Brenly said in a statement. "The Ricketts family, everyone associated with the Cubs and WGN and, most importantly, Cubs' fans everywhere, will always be in our hearts, and Joan and I wish nothing but the best for the organization moving forward.
"I was very blessed to have the best play-by-play man in the game as my partner for eight years and Cubs' fans are very fortunate to have Len Kasper as the voice of the Cubs. I'll miss working with him and we look fondly toward returning to Chicago in the future."
Brenly, who won a World Series as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, replaced Steve Stone in the Cubs broadcast booth after the 2004 season.
Brenly, 58, is leaving a Cubs broadcasting job for the second time. Before his eight-year run with Kasper in the TV booth, Brenly worked as a color commentator on WGN radio for two seasons beginning in 1990. Brenly joined the Diamondbacks TV broadcast during the team's first season in 1998.
"Bob Brenly was a tremendous part of the Chicago Cubs broadcast team for eight years and we will miss his smart analysis, as well as his outgoing personality in the broadcast booth," Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney said in a statement. "We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
Kasper signed a long-term extension with WGN last season. Kasper and Brenly won local Emmy awards after the 2006 and 2008 seasons.
"Bob and (wife) Joan after carefully looking at their options have decided to look at other avenues to pursue in the future," Brenly's agent Barry Meister said. "Needless to say Bob enjoyed all his years with the Cubs and broadcasting for their great fans."
