EIU hires Jay Spoonhour

Jay Spoonhour will be the new men's basketball coach at Eastern Illinois, the school announced Friday.

Spoonhour has been Moberly Area Community College's coach for the past three seasons. He previously won the NJCAA national championship at Wabash College. He was also previously an assistant at Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Texas-San Antonio and Valparaiso and an interim head coach at UNLV.

He is the son of Charlie Spoonhour, a longtime college coach who passed away in February.

Spoonhour replaces Mike Miller, who did not have his contract renewed after seven seasons. Miller compiled a 75-130 overall record and a 44-84 conference mark at Eastern Illinois.

Spoonhour was chosen out of five finalists. The final candidates also included Vanderbilt assistant David Cason, Oregon assistant Brian Fish, Nevada assistant Doug Novsek and Xavier assistant Kareem Richardson.

Eastern Illinois will hold a news conference Monday to introduce Spoonhour.
