Bears release Josh McCown

Third-string quarterback Josh McCown told ESPNChicago.com that he has been released by the Chicago Bears.

The 10-year veteran completed 20 of 29 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears' 28-20 victory over the Cleveland Browns in the preseason finale on Thursday. He played the entire game with Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell -- and every offensive and defensive starter -- held out.

"Everything happens for a purpose," McCown said. "We'll see how it all turns out."

The Bears traded fullback Tyler Clutts to the Houston Texans for cornerback Sherrick McManis, a two-year veteran out of Northwestern. The Houston Chronicle first reported the trade. ESPNChicago.com reported earlier that Clutts had been released.

"A huge thank you to the @ChicagoBears n the city of Chi for a wonderful year! Truly a 1st class team, city n fans. Will miss u," Clutts tweeted on Friday.

Clutts played all 16 games in 2011 with the Bears (eight starts), catching eight passes for 48 yards.

Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher made the team as the No. 6 wide receiver while Lorenzo Booker is the No. 3 running back. Kyle Adams made the team as the Bears decided to keep four tight ends: Adams, Kellen Davis, Matt Spaeth and Evan Rodriguez.

The Bears kept two punters, for now, with undrafted rookie free agent Ryan Quigley surviving on Friday. They also decided to keep seven linebackers as J.T. Thomas and Patrick Trahan round out the depth chart. Defensive tackle Nate Collins will start the year on the reserve/suspended list.

The Bears also released wide receivers Brittan Golden, Joe Anderson and Terriun Crump; running back Armando Allen; tackles Cory Brandon, James Brown and A.J. Greene; cornerbacks Greg McCoy, Cornelius Brown and Isaiah Frey; guard Ricky Henry; safety Mark LeGree; defensive tackle Jordan Miller; tight end Brandon Venson; defensive end Astro Whiteside and linebacker Jabara Williams.

Golden, an undrafted rookie, returned a blocked punt 22 yards for a touchdown in the Bears' win on Thursday.

"Well, I got released today it was a long road," Golden tweeted. "Chicago thanks for the love it was an honor to be here. thanks for the memories."

The Bears also officially terminated the contracts of several vested veterans, including defensive tackle Chauncey Davis, cornerback Jonathan Wilhite, linebacker Xavier Adibi and receiver Rashied Davis.

Chauncey Davis appeared in six games for the Bears last year and recorded nine tackles, 1.0 sack and two tackles for a loss. He entered the NFL in 2005 as a fourth-round draft choice of the Atlanta Falcons. Davis made 25 starts over six seasons with Atlanta.
