Captain Munnerlyn staying in Carolina

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears offered Carolina Panthers free agent Captain Munnerlyn a one-year contract, according to a report in the Charlotte Observer, but the cornerback tweeted Wednesday night that he is staying in Carolina.

The newspaper reported that Carolina could match the offer and Munnerlyn tweeted: "It's officially I'm staying a Carolina Panthers !!!!!!! Lets get it."

The 5-foot-8, 180-pound Munnerlyn started 11 games for the Panthers last season, recording 61 tackles and returning a pair of interceptions for touchdowns.

Munnerlyn has 34 career starts since entering the league in 2009 as Carolina's seventh-round pick out of South Carolina.

The Bears might have viewed Munnerlyn as the replacement for Kelvin Hayden at nickelback, since the team has been unable to sign Hayden in free agency. The Bears have made it clear they want Hayden to return, but the veteran is believed to be looking for more salary than the veteran minimum.
