WASHINGTON -- Chicago Blackhawks forward Kris Versteeg suffered an upper-body injury Thursday during the third period against the Washington Capitals in the Winter Classic and could miss some time, according to coach Joel Quenneville.
"We'll know more [Friday], but we'll see," Quenneville said after his team's 3-2 loss at Nationals Park. "He could be out for a bit."
Versteeg's left hand was struck by a shot from Capitals forward Eric Fehr from a short distance in the opening minute of the third period.
Versteeg immediately fell to the ice in pain. He stood up and held his left hand as he skated to the Blackhawks' bench. He went to the locker room after the next whistle and did not return.
Versteeg had three shots on goal and was a minus-1 in 11:43 of ice time before departing. He has nine goals and 18 assists and is a plus-14 in 34 games this season.
Versteeg missed four games earlier in the season with a lower-body injury. He has been among the Blackhawks' best players this season after spending the entire offseason strengthening his right knee.
