DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers executive Gary Vitto died Sunday after a four-year struggle with cancer. He was 59.

Vitto was the Tigers' senior director and special assistant to the president.

Vitto began his career with the Tigers in 1992 as assistant general manager. He also served as senior director of corporate sales from 1995-98.

Vitto also worked from 1988-92 as general manager for the Detroit Drive arena football team. From 1977-92, he worked in advertising sales for Olympia Arenas and the Detroit Red Wings.

Vitto, from Detroit, was survived by his wife, Maria, his mother, Mary, a sister, Paulette, and a brother, Ronald.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
