Borton had record-setting year in 1952
Associated Press

MASSILLON, Ohio -- John Borton, a record-setting quarterback at Ohio State and a co-captain of the Buckeyes' Rose Bowl championship team in 1954, died at his home. He was 69.

Borton died April 8. The cause of death was not determined.

Borton started as a linebacker for the Buckeyes as a freshman in 1951 and was starting quarterback his sophomore and junior years. He saw limited action as a senior because of a broken finger.

He played for the Cleveland Browns in 1957-58.

Borton worked 27 years for Republic Steel before retiring in 1985 as a division vice president.

With the Buckeyes, he completed 167 of 293 passes for 2,129 yards and 19 touchdowns. In his best year, 1952, he went 115-of-196 for 1,555 yards and 15 TDs -- including a school-record five touchdown passes against Washington State. Bobby Hoying tied that record in 1994 and 1995.

Borton is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sons, three grandchildren and a sister. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday at Central Presbyterian Church in Massillon.
