Tuesday, June 18, 2002 Wren never had losing season, reached one CWS Associated Press ATHENS, Ohio -- Former Ohio University baseball coach Bob Wren, who won 464 games in 24 seasons with the Bobcats, died of cancer June 11. He was 81.
Wren, who became coach of the Bobcats in 1949 following six years in the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system, was 464-160-4 and his .724 winning percentage ranks 12th on the NCAA's career list. He retired in 1972.
Wren never had a losing season and led Ohio to 11 Mid-American Conference titles and a College World Series appearance in 1970. Among the 11 future major leaguers he coached included Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt.
"His captivating presence, keen sense of integrity, and commitment to Ohio University were beyond extraordinary,'' athletic director Thomas Boeh said.
Wren was inducted into the athletics hall of fame at Ohio, his alma mater, in 1967. The university's baseball field was named in his honor in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, one son and two daughters.
The school will hold a memorial service on Friday at the stadium. |
