Friday, September 6, 2002 Albert helped Stanford win 1941 Rose Bowl Associated Press PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Frankie Albert, a former head coach, T-formation quarterback and scout for the San Francisco 49ers has died. He was 82. Albert died Sept. 4 of complications from Alzheimer's disease in Palo Alto, where he lived. He was named head coach in 1956 and held the position for three years. Before that, he was a T-formation quarterback for the 49ers for seven seasons and spent one season with Calgary in the Canadian Football League. Albert was also a T-formation quarterback Stanford University and was at the core of the undefeated team that defeated Nebraska 21-13 in the 1941 Rose Bowl. Albert was born in Chicago in 1920 and played only one year of varsity football in high school because he weighed only 130 pounds. But he played for Stanford for three years, graduated in 1941 and joined the Navy, serving in the Pacific during World War II. Albert is survived by his wife, three daughters and seven grandchildren.
