Associated Press

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Lewis Oehmig, the only three-time Senior Amateur champion and the oldest golfer to win a U.S. Golf Association event, died Sept. 25 at age 86.

A lifelong amateur, Oehmig won Senior Amateur titles in 1972 and 1976. In 1985, at 69, he beat Ed Hopkins in 20 holes to become the oldest USGA champion.

Oehmig, known as "Sweet Lew'' for a fluid swing, also won the Bob Jones Award, the USGA's top award for distinguished sportsmanship in golf, in 1994.

Oehmig played in eight U.S. Senior Opens and qualified for a record 18 USGA Senior Amateur Championships. He was a three-time runner-up in the event.

Oehmig captained the 1977 Walker Cup team that beat Great Britain and Ireland 16-8, and is the only non-Walker Cup player to captain the team.

He won eight Tennessee amateur titles, the last at age 55, and was runner-up a record six times. He won the Tennessee Senior Amateur a record seven times.

He is survived by two sons and six grandchildren.
