Carol Heiss wins figure skating gold
By Phil Lee

February 23, 1960

It’s easy to forget about Carol Heiss. Her name gets lost between Tenley Albright, who in 1956 became the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic figure-skating title, and Peggy Fleming, who in 1968 became the first champion in her sport to have her program broadcast live and in color on television.

But while Heiss may not necessarily have the notoriety of those two, she accomplished the same thing. She won a gold medal. Heiss won the first gold medal for the United States at the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, Calif.

After winning the Olympic gold and a fifth straight world title in 1960, Heiss called it quits.

After her retirement, Heiss, who is now a skating coach, did a movie called “Snow White and the Three Stooges."

"Sometimes, I'm remembered more for that than my skating," Heiss said.
