Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Elway led Broncos on "The Drive" ESPN Classic presents Battle Lines, a series of one-hour journeys, hosted by Rich Eisen, that chronicle the greatest sports events in history. Each episode will focus on the plays, the personalities and the perspectives that have made these events so momentous.
ESPN Classic While this episode explores the 1986 AFC Championship game and the Denver Broncos historic drive, it's a show about much more. It's an hour-long journey that explores the history of the Browns and Broncos, Marty Schottenheimer's bad luck against the Broncos and the intricate details of the 98 yard game-tying drive directed by John Elway.
Classic moment
Trailing 20-13 with 5½ minutes left in the fourth quarter at Cleveland, Denver takes over on its own two, 98 yards away from the tying touchdown. Elway smartly passes and scrambles the Broncos down to the Browns' five-yard line. On third-and-one, Elway fires a dart in the end zone to Mark Jackson with 37 seconds left. Rich Karlis' extra point ties the game. In overtime, two Elway passes account for 50 yards, setting up a 33-yard field goal by Karlis that gives the Broncos a 23-20 victory, sending them to the Super Bowl.
