Answer for May 25, 1937
Having finished up our tribute to the newest Hall of Famers --
including Kirby Puckett's final painful game (he was hit in the cheek by a
pitch and never played again), we now give you the box score from the only
other game where a Hall of Famer's career ended by getting hit by a pitch.
Mickey Cochrane homered in the third inning of this game and was hit in the
head by pitcher Bump Hadley. The pitch fractured Cochrane's skull and nearly
killed him. He recovered but never played again.
The beaning gave Cochrane the distinction of being the only player to end
his career with a home run in his final at-bat and get hit in the head in
his final plate appearance.
