The Pirates suffered a 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds in Three Rivers' opener. That was the same score and result when the Pirates opened Forbes Field against the Chicago Cubs.
Willie Stargell was the first player to hit a home run into stadium's upper deck, which is 70 feet high. It went 469 feet to right field off the Mets' Ron Taylor. Only nine other players have accomplished the feat. Stargell hit the upper deck four times, the most of any player. The only other player to hit the upper deck more than once was Jeff Bagwell, who did it twice. Bobby Bonilla and Bob Robertson are the only other Pirates to hit the upper deck.
The stadium hosted the first MLB playoff game ever played on artificial turf. Pittsburgh beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0.
The Cardinals' Bob Gibson became the first opposing pitcher in history to no-hit the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
