Sammy Winder, a running back from Southern Miss, was taken by the Denver
Broncos in the fifth round of the 1982 draft. After seeing limited action
in his rookie season, Winder became a regular from 1983-88,
starting 77 of 88 regular-season games. He went on to lead the Broncos
in rushing from 1983-87. His best season was in 1984, when he ran 296
times for 1,153 yards and had 44 catches for 1,302 yards and a total of six
touchdowns. Winder, a two-time Pro Bowler, finished with 1,493 rushes for 5,428
yards and 39 TDs. He finished his career in 1990.
