NEW ORLEANS -- Utah was the better team.

It seems so simple considering all the hoopla surrounded Alabama and the SEC, but when it's all broken down, Utah had the better gameplan, the better execution and just looked like it wanted it more.

On Friday, in the Allsate Sugar Bowl, Utah was the better team and was rewarded with a 31-17 victory.

In the biggest game in Utah history, the Utes defied odds and prognosticators and took the game right to Alabama. It wasn't intimidated by the name on the front of its jersey or the history. It played Alabama just like any other team and it came out the better squad.

Chris LowRipped Tide
Nick Saban prides himself on building teams that are physical, resilient and disciplined.

They were all the ingredients that made this season so special for Alabama.

They were also the ingredients that were nowhere to be found Friday night in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, as Alabama uncharacteristically melted in a season-ending 31-17 loss to Utah that will resonate all offseason in Tide Land.

It was supposed to be a feel-good offeseason with all the Crimson Tide accomplished this year.

Not anymore.
